A Few Things Worth Knowing About The HDTV Tuner

As everyone knows for a fact, today HDTV or high definition television has taken over from DTV or digital television and is the latest in television technology thus requiring programs to be in widescreen format so that you can view the high resolution pictures as well as listen to surround sound and thus get superior ambience and a more theater-like experience right there in your home, which is what HDTV is all about. So, if you have a HDTV at home and need to receive as well as output HDTV signals, you just cannot do so without first having a HDTV tuner.

Receives Signals As ATSC And Converts To HDTV Signals

A HDTV tuner is also referred to as a receiver, decoder and even a set-top box, and it is usual for the HDTV tuner to receive signals in ATSC format which are decoded in HDTV signals so that they are fit to be displayed on a HDTV screen, and it also means that the HDTV tuner will provide your HDTV with aspect ratio of 16:9 as well as picture quality in the range between 720p to 1080i.

In addition, it is also normal that the HDTV tuner is able to receive all HDTV signals which include cable and Satellite as well as over-the-air (OTA) broadcasts, and it must also be suitable for receiving any kind of digital VHS recordings. In most instances, the HDTV tuner is used as an external box or it can even is integrated with the HDTV itself and even with a HDTV receiver, and it is generally connected between the television and the antenna. However, should you buy a HDTV that already has a HDTV tuner, then there is no need to use an external HDTV tuner for receiving regular cable channels.

The HDTV tuner is also very handy should you need to view HDTV programs as it can perform the necessary conversion for use even when using an analog television as well as with digital televisions. These tuners are readily available though they come in different prices while an average one would cost you between hundred and four hundred dollars, though the price really will vary from one maker to the other. And, some of the leading makers of such tuners include Sharp and Panasonic, Mitsubishi and Thomson as well as Samsung, and, in addition, it is also possible for you to get your HDTV tuner from any local dealer as too from online stores.

Finally, you can expect different HDTV tuners to come with various features meant to suit different user needs including having program guide displays for each and every channel, self-guided setup as well as interactive program guides. Some of these tuners even come with a hard drive which can record standard TV programs – both digital as well as HDTV, and the many features available in these tuners make it possible for you to enjoy a true home theater experience.

From Analog Television To HDTV Television

What is HDTV Television?

HDTV stands for high definition television. HDTV is a digital television broadcasting system with greater resolution than traditional television systems.

High definition usually refers to 720 vertical lines of resolution or more. Because the signal is a digital signal, it produces a signal that is neither hazy nor snowy.

HDTV is digitally broadcast because digital television requires less bandwidth if sufficient video compression is used. HDTV technology was first introduced in the United States in the early 1900s by a small group of television companies .

How To Acquire The HDTV Signal

To display a superior picture,  HDTVs require a high definition signal. Typical sources of HD signals are as follows:
Over the air with the antenna. Most cities in the U.S. with major network affiliates broadcast over the air in HD. To receive this signal, an HD tuner is required. Most new   HD televisions have an HD tuner built in. For HDTV televisions without a built-in HD tuner, a separate set top HD tuner box can be rented from a cable or Satellite company or purchased by the HD television owner.
cable television companies often offer HDTV broadcasts as part of their digital broadcast service. In addition, many cable companies offer on-demand movies and shows.
Satellite-based TV companies offer HDTV as an upgrade. When this happens, new satellite receiver boxes and satellite dishes may be required.

Definition OF HDTV Broadcast Systems

HDTV broadcast systems are defined in three different ways: one, the number of lines in a vertical display resolution; two, the scanning system, whether it is progressive scanning or interlaced scanning; and three, the number of frames per second or fields per second.

How Big Of A Screen?

If money is not a big concern, then this is going to boil down to, will you mount it on the wall, or leave it on the floor, and how far away from you will it be when you are watching it?

Today many people like to mount HDTV televisions on the wall because the footprint is greatly reduced compared with an entertainment centers.

Will I Notice A Difference?

Almost everyone notices the picture quality difference between their old analog TV and the new HDTV television. Most people feel they are present at the event watching in person. The actors and actresses have certainly noticed  that the pimples and wrinkles that didn’t show on analog TV are clearly visible on HDTV television.

Satellite Internet Access

Tip! I’ve heard you can get Satellite TV for free.

The Internet is a terrestrial-based system, and satellite Internet technology utilizes an extraterrestrial-based system, i.e. satellite, to get connected to the Internet backbone. The need for the access through satellite is the lack of DSL and cable lines in remote areas and in mobile situations such as seafaring vessels.

Tip! Free HD satellite tv receivers (optional).

Satellite Internet access works through a dish at the customer’s location, which sends radio frequencies from the computer to the satellite. The dish is usually of 1.2 m diameter. The customer’s location may be equipped with a satellite modem to convert digital information into analog form. The customer’s location may be a single PC or networked workstations. This obviates the need for telephone lines.

At the other end, the satellite sends back the frequencies to the teleport at a ground station where a number of large aperture dishes are placed. From here, the data is sent to the network system, which consists of routers and optical cables that connect to the Internet backbone. As the Internet backbone is shared by many service providers, the bandwidth availability is restricted by the terrestrial Internet infrastructure.

At the user’s location, the access is determined by the level of service required, whether it is one-way or two-way satellite service. One-way service may require a regular dial up service. A user may need to have a minimum of Windows- or Mac-supported PC with a networking capability. Other requirements include Ethernet port. Other than hardware requirements, software programming to manage interfaces is required.

Broadband access through satellite is a costly alternative to cable modems and DSL. The access is limited by the costly installations and the weather conditions. Besides, the uplink speed is limited by the dial-up speed just like dial-up Internet. The long-haul distance between the dish and satellite results in delay of the access.
